Gowen is a small unincorporated community in Montcalm Township along the banks of the Flat River. While evidence suggests that the area has long been settled by early Native Americans, the community of Gowen was not established until the early 1840’s, Gowen owes its birth to the lumber industry. Like many other communities in the region, the growth of the lumber era brought mills, schools and other businesses to the area. Despite numerous fires and the end of the logging era, this proud community still survives.
The entire area which makes up Montcalm County has a very similar history with fast growth and an influx of residents from other parts of the country and much further. A number of the first settlers in this area were Danish immigrants encouraged to come to America by an early farmer and logger named August Rasmussen.
A popular tourist destination offering a variety of things to see and do throughout the year, Gowen and all of Montcalm County are known for their charm as well as their history, natural areas and popular nearby attractions.
