Ypsilanti, MI. may be best known for Eastern Michigan University, but very few people know how Ypsilanti, also referred to as Ypsi, originally got its name. The original purchase was made by three men, John Stewart, William Harwood and Augustus Brevoort Woodward, who was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Michigan at the time. The men all had different ideas of what to call this new town. Stewart wanted to call the town Waterville, due to the fast moving Huron River which runs through the town. Hardwood wanted to name it Palmyra after an ancient city in what is now called Syria. Somehow they compromised and agreed on the name Springfield. However, when they went to Judge Woodward to record the new name, the judge was adamant that the town should be called Ypsilanti after a Greek military hero Demetrios Ypsilantis. Demetrios Ypsilantis was the commander of the Eastern Greek army fighting for independence from Turkey. The war which was eventually won, due in large part to the command of Demetrios Ypsilantis, reminded Americans of the American war for independence and Demetrios was admired and regarded as a hero by the American people. The partners finally agreed upon the name Ypsilanti, the same year the Greeks won their independence.
