Located within the surrounding city of Southfield, Lathrup Village, is a charming area with friendly neighbors and beautiful, tree-lined subdivisions. The village was the brainchild of developer Louise Lathrup Kelley, when in 1923 she purchased 1,000 acres of land in Southfield. She then began to plot out the one and a half square mile area into plots where residential construction began. Kelley was an amazing innovator of her time and established numerous ways to connect the relatively isolated village to more established neighborhoods, including ways to shuttle residents back and forth to attend to their shopping needs. She was also responsible for holding builders and contractors to the highest of building standards which is evident in the quality of the custom built homes still standing today. Kelley’s out-of-the-box thinking lead to a unique method for residents, which allowed them to wrap auto financing into their home mortgages. This new loan process further enabled the town’s people to connect with neighboring towns. The village was officially incorporated in 1953 and Kelley, along with her husband, continued making remarkable contributions to the growing city. Upon her death in 1963, Kelley’s remaining land holdings were sold and developed.
It’s that kind of dedication, hard work and innovative thinking that creates new towns like Lathrup Village, advances in technology and innovations in medicine.
