Rheumatic Conditions – making the most of your diagnosis
Many of the patients at the Arthritis Institute of Michigan come to us without hope of relief from overwhelming diagnoses. Unlike some conditions, many rheumatic conditions have no cures and can only be managed but thankfully, in many cases, management includes simple life changes including getting a bit more rest, eating healthier and ensuring you are getting the right amount of exercise and proper nutrition.
Make the most of your diagnosis by considering the following:
- Pay attention to how each treatment makes you feel – there are many different treatments, some may help you and others may not. Be sure you monitor your progress and share it on your next visit.
- Stay positive – more and more, doctors are realizing the impact attitude plays on healing. Stay positive and aid in your treatment.
- Stay active – while it can often be difficult to want to exercise, there is a direct connection between activity and symptoms of these conditions. Talk to your rheumatologist before starting your exercise program and find the one that is right for you.
- Find a qualified rheumatologist who you are comfortable with – you will need to be open with your rheumatologist. Be sure you find someone who you are comfortable with.
A rheumatologist can assist you in many ways including helping you understand all the ways you can help improve how you feel as well as providing treatments to further aid in your quality of life for years to come.
